Intermittent DSL is the term given to a situation where you get DSL signal and are able to connect fine, however you regularly lose signal. You can usually tell by the logs in your broadband modem when it loses DSL on a regular basis.

Typical causes:

• Unfiltered POTS device on line
• Faulty filter
• Possible jackpoint issue
• Possible line issue
• Possible modem issue

Steps

Always restart your modem between steps.

1. Check your phone line for devices. All devices such as phones, faxes, dial up modems, alarms (very important!), and sky boxes should be connected with filters. If they are not, they can cause the connection to drop whenever they are in use. If they are plugged in directly, either put a filter on them first or unplug them.

2. If all devices are filtered and it is causing issues, look at the filter on the broadband router. Most modems come with two filters so try the second filter.

3. Try removing all other devices on the phone line.

4. Try using the modem on different jackpoints in the household. If it works fine on other jackpoints it could be a jackpoint issue.

5. Try using a different modem if possible to see if the same issues occur. If they don't, it could be a modem issue.

6. If that fails, it could be a line issue. You should contact your Internet Service provider.

Note: If you have a monitored alarm or more than 3 jackpoints in use, you should strongly consider using a splitter. These devices ensure that alarms do not interfere with with ADSL connection. Keep in mind that when you get a splitter installed, only one jackpoint will be able to use ADSL as the others will be filtered.

If you already have a filter installed. You should make sure that you are plugging your modem directly into the unfiltered socket, typically labelled ADSL or Data.
