Slow DSL speeds

From New Zealand Connections

DSL speeds can vary dramatically depending on a number of factors such as your internet provider and phone line.

This article discusses some things that you can do to try and improve your connection speeds within your house

Common causes:

  • Double plugs
  • Extension cables
  • High number of extensions
  • Poor quality internal wiring
  • Filters issues

Before starting, check your internet plan to see if you are not capped or are on a 'slower' plan. Some providers such as Slingshot or WorldxChange offer plans at 256kbps.

1. Try swapping filters to see if it improves.

2. Check to see if you have any double plugs feeding your DSL modem. These can reduce your modem speeds by creating inteference on the line, remove them if possible.

3. Try and have your modem plugged directly into a jackpoint or filter. Extension cables can have a similar effect as double plugs, particularly if they are of long distance or if they are coiled.

4. Do you have a high number of extensions? The more extensions you have, the greater possibility that it will impact your connection. If you have more than 3 active jackpoints, you should consider getting a splitter installed. If you have Naked DSL, you should only have 1 jackpoint.

5. If you have poor internal wiring in your house, you may experience issues with your broadband. If you have made modifications, you may wish to check the cabling, wiring practices and jackpoints to ensure that they are of the a high standard.

If you have performed all checks, you may need to contact your Internet provider.
