Background

Zenbu Networks Limited was developed during 2006 and 2007 and has been in full commercial operation since June 2007. It provides Wi-Fi wireless internet access to zone operators and their customers around New Zealand. Zenbu Networks Ltd is a privately owned New Zealand company.

Zone operators buy a Wi-Fi router on-line from Zenbu, currently Linksys WRT54GL model, plug it into their ADSL DHCP service and after connection and authentication with the Zenbu servers in Auckland are ready to provide service.

People can buy service on-line using their credit cards, or from zone operators if zone operators print vouchers. Zone operators sometimes sell the vouchers to their customers, and sometimes give them away as business promotion tools.

Zenbu sells megabytes, not time, which prevents over-loading, slow speeds and excessive usage. It also means subscribers don't have to have time on their minds while using the service. They can take as long as they like composing an email and they pay only for how much data they send, not how long they are connected. If they want to check email 10 times a day for a week, and there's no email for them, it would cost them almost nothing.

Credit bought on-line can be used at any Zenbu zone. Credit bought from a zone operator, or given by a zone operator, is usable only at the zone operator's premises.

Zenbu wireless is now the biggest Wi-Fi provider at accommodation providers in New Zealand in terms of number of points of presence in operation. Zenbu is the third biggest Wi-Fi network provider in New Zealand after Telecom and CafeNET in total points of presence in operation.

Zenbu Limited is a separate company which provides directory, search and mapping to the Zenbu Wi-Fi system and to anyone else who wishes to use it.
